Cockroach Spray

The whole world seems to have plunged into a kind of “devil’s advocate” weather pattern: huge storms in Asia, freezing weather in the Eastern United States, record temperatures in Europe, and unending grey days in the middle of summer heat season, Japan.

Motorcycles don’t usually impress me all that much, especially when they roar through the backroads where I’m trying to get away from the noise of the city on my bicycle, but this one moment has stuck with me.

Cruelty

Last night the movie “Malena”, by Italian director Guiseppe Tornatore, was shown on TV and I watched it a second time. It had lost none of its powerful effect, and the climactic scene, when Malena is beaten and her hair shorn in public, left me chilled and deeply sad. Who hasn’t witnessed similar events of cruelty?
